Substitutes play an instrumental role in promoting a safe and supportive learning environment.

Guest Employees (former known as Substitutes) are an integral part of the educational team working with students to ensure learning continues when the regular employee is absent. Whether you are a paraeducator, teacher, school nurse, or work in a different capacity, your presence and nurturing attitude can make a positive impact in the life of a student.

Education & Requirements

In general, substitutes must meet the same qualifications as the position for which they are substituting. To learn more about the requirements, visit the following pages:

In addition, we place LPNs, school nurses and school counselors.

All substitutes must:

  • Pass a criminal justice fingerprint/background check at their own expense. The cost is $81, and the fingerprints can be taken at any ESD in the state.
  • Complete SafeSchools training. Your login will be emailed to you.

Becoming a Substitute

Each year, from July 15 – May 15, we accept applications for the following positions:

  • Bus monitor
  • Clerical
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • Paraeducator
  • School Counselor
  • School Nurse
  • Teacher

Applicants will receive an email explaining next steps after they submit an application.

Guest employee placement is on an on-call, as-needed basis as dictated by the daily needs of our participating districts. Be advised, there is no guarantee of placement on any given day and no ongoing expectation of placement.


Substitute pay varies by school district and position.

Substitute positions are not eligible for benefits, with the exception of sick leave.

Substitutes earn one hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked within the same district. They may earn sick leave for each district in which they work.
